New North Indian Restaurant  Opens this week on Hutt Street
Foodies, if you are fond of the fresh variety of the Indian sub-continent cuisine you'll be excited about the new Tandoori Cafe opening its doors this week on Hutt Street, opposite the clock tower.

Chef Navi, a native from the North Indian rural area of Punjabi grew up on a farm house and learnt the traditions of Punjabi cooking before coming to Sydney and eventually settling in Adelaide. Navi said of the three main food strips in Adelaide Hutt Street didn't have an Indian Restaurant so when an opportunity presented itself he was quick to secure a position in the Precinct. Before the doors had even opened he has received warm welcomes from locals and traders. Great news for Hutt Street as the Tandoori Cafe is open 7 days a week for lunch  (10.30am to 2.30pm) and dinner (4.30pm till 10pm).

Ask about the daily lunch specials from $8 to $15 and be tempted to come back again for a real Indian Tandoori Bite. Yes they have a takeaway menu. Tandoori Cafe will be fully licensed from the first week in April, meanwhile try their special mango lassi  www.tandooricafe.com.au

Historic Twilight Walking Tour a huge success
Precinct coordinator Yvonne Merendi attended The South East City Heritage Twilight Walk which started at the Box Factory on Wednesday Feb 22nd. This FREE walk led by Heather Nimmo was an overwhelming success with around 25 people attending. The group explored the architecture and history of our area covering mansions, factories, workers' cottages, reservoirs and early hotels on a barmy summer's evening.

Ms Merendi said Heather's knowledge of the area is wonderful and her narrative gave a new sense of appreciation of the area.  If you would like to see more historic tours of the Hutt Street Precinct organised please take the time to post a comment on facebook.com/huttprecinct.

DID YOU KNOW?
The aboriginal flag was designed in the Hutt Street Precinct!

The designer of the Aboriginal Flag, Harold Thomas lived in St John's Lane and went to Pulteney Grammar School in 1963 and 1964. HSPA past chairperson and honorary life member, Richard Abbott remembers playing football with Harold at Pulteney.  He was a member of Mr Frank Greet's watercolour painting group and in 1965 he won a scholarship to the SA School of Art, graduating in 1969 becoming the first Aboriginal to graduate from an Australian Art School.  Harold  also has an Honorary Degree in Social Anthroplogy from Adelaide University.  In 1970 he worked as a survey artist at the South Australian Museum. Harold has continued to work as an artist with his works on display in several Australian galleries.

Harold Thomas was born in Alice Springs in 1947; his mother a Luritja woman and his father a Wombai man. It was whilst serving as the Rector of St John's Priory, the Rev'd Donald Wallace and his wife Gwen invited a young aboriginal boy, Harold Thomas, to join their family. His considerable artistic talent was soon evident. It is recorded that Harold designed the current aboriginal flag on the table in the Rectory kitchen.  Harold's first exhibition of 8 oil paintings and 35 watercolours was at St John's Fete in 1964.

The flag was first flown at Victoria Square in Adelaide on National Aborigines Day, 12 July 1971. It was created as a symbol of unity and national identity for Aboriginal people during the land rights movement of the early 1970s. In 1995, the Australian Government proclaimed the flag as an official 'Flag of Australia' under section 5 of the Flags Act 1953.

Danish Success Story Opens its First Restaurant in Australia... on Hutt St
Together with his Australian partner, Tim Burvill, Lars Damgaards and a crew of builders have worked across time zones and language barriers for the last 12 months to create the A Hereford Beefstouw at 143 Hutt Street.

It is located in a heritage listed building owned by Chris Diamantis of the Genworth Group, who completely restored it to its original 1850s facade. Tim Burvill lives and works in the Adelaide Hills with wine as his livelihood, and it was also the wine business that brought him in contact with Lars Damgaard.  Tim owns the successful RockBare winery, and met Lars nearly 10 years ago when Lars came to Australia looking for wine for the restaurants.  They not only discovered that they had a mutual love of wine, but also of Hereford cattle.

Lars' restaurants were named after these majestic animals that his parents used to farm and Tim and his wife Sarah farmed Hereford cattle in the Adelaide Hills and upper south-east. "It was a natural progression for our business to eventually open a restaurant here. I thought that Adelaide would love this kind of restaurant and since our wine and farming operation is based in SA, it seemed crazy to export all of our production to Europe without giving the locals a chance to experience who we do", says Tim Burvill.  "Not only are we paddock to plate, we're also grape to glass with many of the wines served in the restaurant made by my wife and I,"  he quips.  "Combined with A Hereford Beefstouw's 40-years experience in running restaurants in Denmark, their strong focus on creating beautiful spaces for their venues, and the quality of our produce, I am confident we have a solid platform to succeed in Adelaide."

A Hereford Beefstouw is open 7 days on the corner of Hutt Street and Hume Street. Lunch from 11.30am to 2pm and dinner 5.30pm to 10pm. Ring 8232 6868. For further information go to www.aherefordbeefstouw.com.au

Becoming Carbon Neutral makes Good Business Sense
Reducing the energy costs of business is vital at any time but even more so when trading conditions are tough. Energy costs are predicted to double over the next 6 years.  So aiming to become carbon neutral makes perfect sense to businesses because you save money, you can market your business immediately as environmentally sensitive and ultimately market yourself as Carbon Neutral demonstrating leadership in your Precinct.

Dennis Hensman from Energy Efficient Building explained to President HSPA Gary Locke that many businesses can save between 10 to 15% on energy bills simply as a result of behavioural change by staff. Employees are not intentionally wasteful, but simply need to be educated.

Air conditioning is another major issue – setting the temperatures at the wrong setting is an expensive exercise – a rule of thumb is for every degree the setting is out the running costs increase by 10%. Lighting solutions and window film are two other excellent and affordable solutions for energy reduction. See this link for more information.

Pictured above with Gary Locke, Dennis Hensman displays a very powerful LED external security light costing just 5 cents to run for 12 hours. Dennis Hensman from Energy Efficient Building can be contacted on 08 8223 7400.

Rotary Club of Adelaide West named as major sponsor of SALA on Hutt

A Personal Invitation to Lunch
Newly elected President Randolph Alwis of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West would like to invite local traders and residents to attend a lunch meeting and learn about Rotary in your community. The group meets every Thursday at 1pm at the Public School's Club on the corner of East Terrace and Carrington Street.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self

Rotary Club of Adelaide West is proud to be the major sponsor of SALA ON HUTT 2011.

Public Access Defibrillator
The Heart Foundation has recently purchased a public access defibrillator (PAD) that is located in the reception area of the Heart Foundation at 155 Hutt Street.

This device is simple to use and "voice" prompts users what steps to take. Heart Foundation staff are able to assist members of the general public should the need ever arise.

Of course, the Heart Foundation remains vigilant in recommending that people immediately contact Triple 000 in the event of a heart attack or cardiac arrest but is it useful to know that we now have this device available in the Hutt Street area.

Pedestrian Crossing Needed
There is increasing community support for a pedestrian crossing opposite the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac on Hutt Street. This is just one project HSPA is working with the local community and ACC.

Register your support/view on facebook or drop us an email at hspa@live.com.au

HSPA Committee Invited to Town Hall
It is not often members of the public have an opportunity to tour inside the Adelaide Town Hall, but thanks to a special invite by Clr Tony Williamson the committee was treated to special tour of the Town Hall before holding their regular meeting.

On the first Monday evening of each month the HSPA committee meets in various locations around the Precinct to discuss current topics of interest and concern and plan for up and coming events and activities. The AGM is fast approaching and is scheduled for Wednesday 3th August, so if you are a current financial member and wish to become more actively involved, now is the time to find out more about how the committee works for both businesses and residents interests and the continuing prosperity of the Hutt Street Precinct.

Everything Old is New Again
Gary Locke, President of the Hutt Street Traders Association attended the three day Mainstreet Conference held in Adelaide recently, themed "Everything old is new again" where he held a guided walk for 25 national and International delegates.

Starting from Pirie St they walked and talked their way up Hutt St diverting into side streets along the way. With the valued help of Clr Sandy Wilkinson and Art's coordinator Janice Argent they discussed the current and lost beautiful historic buildings, the vibrancy of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. They talked about the many services the area provides, old and new residents, trees and gardens and SALA on Hutt. Many traders waved or said hello, residents chatted and gave visitors a warm welcome.

Gary said,"I felt very proud to show off our "village in the city" and was pleased with the great feedback from all delegates. The Hutt St Precinct is not just access to services but to a whole community."

Chianti Classico Celebrates 25 Years!
Frank and Maria Favaro have plenty of reasons to celebrate! Chianti Classico is one of 3 Italian restaurants recently to have been awarded the "Ospitalita Italiana" award (Italian Hospitality) in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,Trade and Development & Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as part of a world wide campaign to promote true and authentic Italian cuisine.

Chianti is also celebrating a quarter of a century of the popular restaurant which started on the edge of Light Square with green and white checked tablecloths and raffia-wrapped Chianti bottles. Times have changed as Frank and Maria's business evolved along with the Australian palate and today Chianti Classico on the corner of Hutt and Carrington Street is more about fine dining with a menu focusing on the regions of Toscana, Veneto and Piemonte.

The success of the Hutt Street restaurant has allowed expansion with the opening of the "Gallo Nero' room upstairs for more intimate private fuctions. Plans are moving ahead for a casual bar and eatery in the heritage row cottage next door to the restaurant, opening in the next few months.
